Dr Andrew Smith of flood mapping company Fathom attended the UN’s expert meeting on the Global Risk Assessment Framework in Geneva this week.

100 people from the field of hazard and risk assessment attended the event, which aimed to establish a standing Expert Group on global risk assessment in support of the Sendai Framework. The findings of the group will be featured in the global risk analysis of the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2019.

Fathom is delighted to have been recognised as world-leaders in the field of flood mapping. One of the topics discussed at the meeting was the optimization of modelling and data for use in enhances exposure, vulnerability, and impact analysis, which is the focus of our recently published peer-reviewed paper.

Andrew Smith said: “We are honoured to have been invited to this meeting on matters of global importance, and hope to work closely in support of the UN in the run up to the Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2019.”

The group will present a more comprehensive set of risk metrics, which will provide a complete assessment of potential losses across hazard types, facilitate the appropriate prioitisation of risk reduction efforts, and assess these efforts in reducing and preventing new risks, and strengthening resilience.

A range of hazards, models, and initiatives that could form the next iteration of the Global Risk Assessment will be assessed, potentially putting Fathom’s map model in the running for use on a global scale, facilitated by UN recommendations.
